Palace Stands by Gatchalian Amid Senate Leadership Dispute

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has reiterated its recognition of Senator Sherwin Gatchalian as the acting leader of the Senate despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the chamber’s leadership.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that the executive branch respects the actions taken by the Senate majority and considers the recent developments consistent with legal and democratic processes. According to Castro, the administration acknowledges Gatchalian’s leadership while leaving the resolution of internal Senate issues to the lawmakers themselves.

The statement comes as competing factions within the Senate continue to disagree over the legitimacy of recent proceedings that resulted in Gatchalian assuming the role of acting Senate President. The leadership change followed days of political tension that temporarily disrupted Senate operations and delayed legislative work.

Malacañang also called on senators to prioritize their legislative responsibilities and work toward resolving their differences through established institutional mechanisms. The Palace stressed that maintaining stability within the Senate is essential for advancing key measures and addressing national concerns.

While questions regarding the legality of the leadership transition continue to be debated by various lawmakers, the administration maintained that it recognizes the current Senate leadership as constituted by the chamber’s majority bloc.

Political observers are closely monitoring the situation, as the outcome could have significant implications for the Senate’s legislative agenda and the broader political landscape in the coming months.
